Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I establish paternity voluntarily?
At the hospital, anytime after delivery of the child and before the death of either parent, the mother and father can sign a form called an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) stating the father is the biological parent. The parents must provide photo ID and sign in front of a notary.
How much does it cost?
If the AOP is signed at the hospital after the birth of your child there is no charge.
What if the mother and/or father is under 18?
Parental permission is not needed for minor parents to voluntarily establish paternity in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
